Misconceptions

20 Aug, 2026

Here at House Cup, our mission is simple: help normal humans (yeah, you and me) make an awesome cup of coffee at home without needing a PhD in barista science. To celebrate, let's bust five coffee myths that will make you look like a rockstar.

There is no “X” in espresso.

It’s espresso, not expresso. It’s a coffee style, not a fast train. If you want to look fancy at your next neighborhood block party, leave the "X" in the garage next to your old rollerblades.

"Espresso beans" are a myth

There’s no magical tree growing specific espresso beans. Espresso is a method of brewing, not a bean type or a roast level. Sure, traditionalists love it dark, but West Coast hipsters are out there pulling espresso shots with light roasts. Any bean can join the espresso party if it's ground fine enough.

Coffee beans are secretly fruit pits

Mind blown: coffee is actually a cherry. The "bean" is just the pit inside. You could eat it raw, but it’s rock-hard and shockingly tart. That’s why farms wash and dry them, and why we roast them so they taste like heaven instead of a bad decision.

Decaf is a liar

If you think decaf is a safe zone at 11 PM, beware. An average cup of decaf still packs up to 7mg of caffeine. Depending on how it's processed, about 1% to 3% of that original morning kick is still lurking in your mug, waiting to keep you awake during late-night infomercials.

"Italian Coffee" doesn't exist

Spoiler alert: they don't grow coffee in Italy. Or France. Or anywhere in Europe. All coffee comes from the "Coffee Belt" near the equator. What Italy did invent is a super-dark roasting style. It’s a vibe, not a geographic origin.
